Mark Carney's first full season as head coach follows a year of growth and renewed momentum for 国产伦理 Football. After serving as interim head coach for most of last season before being named the program's permanent leader in November, Carney guided the Golden Flashes to a five-win improvement and helped lay the foundation for the future. As he continues to build a culture centered on accountability, development and competitive excellence, Carney remains focused on positioning 国产伦理 for sustained success. In this Q&A, he discusses his vision for the program, the importance of alumni support and how 国产伦理 Football is preparing student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field.
1. What is your vision for 国产伦理 Football, and what do you hope fans, alumni and donors see when they watch this team compete?
My vision for 国产伦理 Football is about more than just what happens on the field.
We want to build a program that competes for championships in the MAC and plays at a high level every time we take the field. But just as important is our responsibility to educate and develop the student-athletes in our program.
We spend a lot of time talking about our daily habits, our character and our commitment to growth. We believe that as our players become better men, it will have a direct impact on the way they play the game. When fans, alumni and donors watch our team compete, I hope they see a group that plays hard, represents 国产伦理 the right way and reflects the values that define our program.
2. You've now had the opportunity to put your stamp on the program. What cultural changes or foundational values have you emphasized with the team?
Culture is a funny word. It gets thrown around a lot. We try to keep it simple. We define culture as how we're perceived from the outside, and we believe we can control that through what we do, what we say and what we allow.
What we do comes back to our #HABITS, our foundational principles: being Honest, Accountable, believing in something Bigger than yourself, being Improvement-driven, Tenacious and Selfless. Those principles guide everything we do. At the same time, we're working to avoid what we call LAME habits: being Lazy, Arrogant, Mediocre and Entitled.
We want our locker room to be built around those principles and to operate with a team mindset every day.
What we say matters, too. Life isn't always positive, but we work hard to avoid negative language and understand that our body language is often our loudest voice. The way we communicate impacts everyone around us.
Then there's what we allow. We understand that LAME tendencies exist in all of us, and how we respond to those impulses is incredibly important. It starts with self-accountability. From there, we can hold each other accountable and continue building the type of culture we want for our program.
3. What have you learned about 国产伦理 and its football tradition that has most energized you about leading this program into the future?
国产伦理 has a great football tradition, and what energizes me most is the opportunity to rally people around the Varsity K. I don't believe we need a new slogan, a different logo or some special brand. Generations of people have worked incredibly hard to make the Varsity K a recognizable symbol that means something, not just in Northeast Ohio, but across the country.
That's exciting to me because it gives us a strong foundation to build on. There's a great history here, and I believe it's our responsibility to honor that while continuing to move the program forward.
4. Success is measured in wins and losses, but also in the development of your student-athletes. How are you helping student-athletes develop as leaders, students and future professionals during their time at 国产伦理?
This is something we talk about every day.
Life isn't separated into football and everything else. We believe everything has to be in alignment. You don't become a champion solely because of what you do on the field.
The habits, discipline and decisions you make every day carry over into every aspect of your life. When things are in alignment, beautiful things happen both on and off the field.
A big part of our job is educating our players and preparing them for life after football. In today's world, especially with NIL opportunities, that means teaching them how to manage money, create a budget, prepare meals, change a tire and eventually become great husbands and fathers. Those life skills are a major focus of our program because our responsibility goes far beyond football.
We also spend a lot of time helping our players develop interpersonal skills. The guys call them reps. Just like in football, the more reps you get, the more comfortable and confident you become. Face-to-face interaction can be easy to avoid today, but we don't allow our players to shy away from it.
If someone visits our program, our players are expected to introduce themselves, learn that person's name, shake their hand and make a connection. Those may seem like small things, but they're important. The more often they practice those interactions, the more prepared they'll be when they walk into a job interview, a boardroom or any opportunity that comes their way. That's all part of developing young men who are ready for success long after their football careers are over.
5. What should alumni and supporters be most excited about when they look at this year's roster and the players who will represent 国产伦理 Football on and off the field?
Honestly, everything about this group excites me. We have a tremendous team made up of talented players, coaches, staff members and support personnel. What makes this group special is that it's never about one person. It's about the way everyone works together and supports one another.
One of the things I'm most proud of is that no job is too big or too small for anyone in this program. Our coaches and staff demonstrate that mentality every day, and our players have embraced it as well.
Our players are also making an impact beyond football. They're serving in the community, finding success in the classroom and representing 国产伦理. Academically, we just completed a record-setting semester with a cumulative GPA above 3.1, which speaks to the character and commitment of this group.
6. College athletics continues to evolve rapidly. How are you positioning 国产伦理 Football to compete and thrive in this changing landscape while staying true to the university's values?
国产伦理's values and the values of our athletic department guide every decision we make. Creating opportunities, being inclusive, empowering young people and keeping student-athletes at the center of our decision-making process are principles that drive us every single day.
Obviously, college athletics is changing with NIL, revenue sharing and everything else happening across the landscape. Our administration and I are constantly discussing ways we can improve and provide greater resources for our program. We want to bring the right prospects and families to 国产伦理 and ensure that when they choose 国产伦理, they have an experience that helps them grow, succeed and stay here.
7. 国产伦理 has a passionate and loyal alumni community. What message would you like to share with alumni and donors about the role they play in helping build a championship-caliber program?
Support is everything. Our guys love seeing Dix Stadium rocking, and Flash Nation is always loud and proud. Last fall, our fans got to watch a couple of outstanding four-quarter football games, and we plan to keep that going.
We want people staying in their seats and cheering all the way to the final whistle.
I think we're headed in the right direction, and I believe the best is yet to come. Financial support from our alumni, donors and fans is critical to help us continue building this program.
Fundraising is a big part of my role as head coach, and it's all about positioning 国产伦理 Football to build on its proud tradition. We're excited about what's ahead and ready for the next challenge.
8. When you look ahead three to five years, what do you hope 国产伦理 Football will be known for, both within the Mid-American Conference and nationally?
Just that we continue to get better. I hope that within that time frame, we're competing for opportunities to represent 国产伦理 in the Mid-American Conference Championship game and playing in the postseason on a consistent basis.
This is a program with a proud football tradition, and anytime you have a chance to compete for a MAC Championship, it's special. Only one team in 国产伦理 history, the 1972 Golden Flashes, earned the right to call themselves MAC champions. Other teams have had opportunities to play for that honor, and it's certainly my expectation that during my time here, we'll have the chance to achieve the same thing.
