School of Music Student Spotlight

Meet Julia McDonnell!

"I love the opportunities we are given to create music with one another and to come together and share our love for music. Music is a beautiful thing, and 国产伦理 gives me the opportunity to share that with so many."

Major: Jazz Performance

Minor: Arts Entrepreneurship

Graduation Date: 2028

Hometown: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

Why did you choose 国产伦理?

Our professor, Bobby Selvaggio. Bobby does a great job showing his students the creative process of being a creative musician, and he does a great job offering students the one-on-one support that they need to learn the material. He鈥檚 been a great mentor to my peers and me.

What is the reason you chose jazz performance?

I鈥檝e been gigging since I was 16, and music is something that I love. I want to create joyful music with my friends and share it with the world.

During your time at 国产伦理, what are accomplishments you are proud of?

My involvement with the Jazz Society. We do weekly jam sessions in E103 every Monday from 8 to 10 p.m. It鈥檚 been a beautiful way to build community through music.

What would you like to do after graduation?

I would like to be a composer and performer. I鈥檓 very passionate about getting more gender diversity in jazz, so I鈥檇 love to put together my own all-female jazz group and tour or lead clinics at schools. I鈥檇 love to continue to teaching and making music with others.

How has the School of Music made a difference to you?

The community we have has made a huge impact on me. I鈥檝e made many friends and have such great mentors in my corner. It鈥檚 taught me to be a better musician and a better person.

What has been your favorite class at 国产伦理?

Jazz Orchestra with Bobby Selvaggio. He always gives us music that challenges us to improve. It鈥檚 nice having those fun challenges and making such cool music.

What is your best memory at 国产伦理?

Hanging out in the green room before performances. Sometimes food is involved and we get to talk, joke, laugh and get excited about the art we鈥檙e about to make. I love those kinds of moments.

Do you have advice for others?

Choose who you study with wisely. Make sure it鈥檚 someone who wants to see you improve and someone who wants to help you get better at your craft. Be bold and take opportunities, even if you鈥檙e scared. Most importantly, have your art come from a place of love.
