Student Spotlight: Oumou M. Sall

Meet Oumou M. Sall!

"I chose ¹ú²úÂ×Àí because of its strong reputation for combining creative excellence with industry preparation. The School of Fashion offered a curriculum that values both design and professional development, which was important to me as someone who wanted to grow not only as a designer, but as a strategic thinker within the fashion industry."

Major:  Fashion Design
Graduation Date: May 2026
Hometown: Dakar, Senegal & Columbus, Ohio

What is the reason you chose your major?

I chose fashion design because it allows me to merge culture, craftsmanship and storytelling into something tangible from growing up between Senegal’s heritage and American education. I became deeply interested in how clothing can express identity in history. Fashion design gave me a language to translate those experiences into form, structure and material. It also challenges me to think critically about people's purpose and impact, not just aesthetics.

In your time at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí, what are some accomplishments you are proud of?

One accomplishment I am especially proud of is developing a clear, personal design and identity rooted in culture, craftsmanship and research through studio projects and external opportunities. I’ve learned how to translate concepts into intentional projects. I’m also proud of completing multiple internships and collaborations while maintaining a strong academic performance, which allows me to gain real-world experience alongside my studies. These experiences helped me grow both creatively and professionally.

What would you like to do after graduation?

After graduation, I hope to continue developing within the luxury fashion industry, gaining hands-on experience in product development and design at a global level. My long-term goal is to work within an established fashion house where I can learn from experienced teams while contributing a strong point of view, shaped by research, culture and craftsmanship. I’m excited to grow as a designer who creates meaningful work that connects people's heritage and innovation.

How has the School of Fashion made a difference to you?

My program has made a difference by teaching me how to think as both a designer and a professional. The School of Fashion emphasizes research, concept development and technical execution, which helped me understand a full process behind building a collection. It also encouraged me to take initiative, seek out opportunities and approach my work with discipline and purpose. These lessons shaped how I designed and how I prepare for a career industry.

What are things you love about ¹ú²úÂ×Àí?

What I love most about ¹ú²úÂ×Àí and the School of Fashion is the balance between creativity and structure. The program challenges students to explore their individuality while also preparing them for the realities of the fashion industry. I also value a supportive faculty and the access to professional resources which helped me build confidence in both my work and my voice, giving me a strong foundation to grow creatively, academically and professionally.

What has been your favorite class at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí?

Thus Far, Fashion Concepts, Fashion Draping, Portfolio I and Jr. Studio II.

What are your favorite campus events?

F.S.O. Fashion Show and the Annual B.F.A. Fashion Show!

What is your best memory at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí?

My best memory was studying abroad in Paris at the Paris American Academy, which gave me the opportunity to experience fashion education in an international context. Being immersed in a different culture helped me better understand how history, craftsmanship and identity influence design. It also pushed me outside of my comfort zone.

What was your favorite memory while studying abroad?

My favorite memory studying in Paris was being surrounded by the history of couture while actively learning the craft. Walking through the city each day, and then returning to the studio to work, made the connection between heritage and modern design feel very real. It was the first time I truly experienced fashion both as culture and industry at the same time. It deepened my appreciation for craftsmanship and confirmed my desire to work within global luxury fashion.

Do you have advice for others?

My advice to other students is to take ownership of your journey early. Be curious and ask questions. Don’t wait until you feel ready to pursue opportunities. Use your time in school to explore, build skills and learn from both successes and mistakes. Most importantly, stay true to your perspective. Your background and experiences are a part of what makes your work valuable.
