Perfect Arrangement

By Topher Payne

Directed by Caitlin Kane

October 22-November 1 | Wright-Curtis Theatre

It鈥檚 1950, and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. There鈥檚 just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other鈥檚 partners as a carefully constructed cover. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, madcap classic sitcom-style laughs give way to provocative drama as two 鈥淎ll-American鈥 couples are forced to stare down the closet door.

PERFECT ARRANGEMENT is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.

A Note from the Director

In 1957, an astrophysicist named Frank Kameny was fired from the Army Map Service not because of the quality of his work or his qualifications but because he was gay. Far from an outlier, Kameny was one of thousands of gay and lesbian federal employees who were fired and blacklisted by the government during the Lavender Scare.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, however, Kameny refused to stay silent. Instead, he sued the Secretary of the Army for wrongful termination. When that lawsuit failed, he co-founded the Washington D.C. branch of the Mattachine Society, which diverged significantly in aims and tactics from its West Coast predecessors. The members of the D.C. Mattachine Society were invested in a militant form of gay activism that rejected popular understandings of homosexuality as immoral and a form of mental illness. Instead, they described themselves as joining other minoritized groups in a fight for civil rights and human decency.

Set in 1950, Topher Payne鈥檚 鈥淧erfect Arrangement鈥 fictionalizes the stories of the gay and lesbian federal workers, like Frank Kameny, who lost their careers to the Lavender Scare but found in one another the courage and power to live their lives openly. As we move through an era that many have described as a new Lavender Scare, I hope that we, too, can find the courage to turn toward one another and demand more just and livable futures for all.
